The ice-fringed Deschutes river, just off the Drake park point, was the scene of a swimming party on the first day of the new year when two local youths, tentatively identified as Neil Farnham and Harry Miller, took a mid-winter plunge, according to information from people who live on the west bank of the mirror pond. The meager information available today indicates that the swimming party intended to be a private affair. Neither boy could be contacted today to deny or verify the “charges” that they took a mid-winter swim in the icy Deschutes, but so far as their friends know they suffered no ill effects.
This is said to be the first time the Deschutes has been used on New Year’s day for swimming purposes since Robert Woerner took a plunge in the mirror pond on January 1 several yeasr ago.
