James McCool, member of the Oregonian sports staff, and Ernest Crockatt, educational director for the state game commission, are to be judges of the mirror pond game conservation essays written by school children of Bend, it was announced today by Dr. J.C. Vandevert, member of the state game commission. Ready for shipment to the game department office in Portland, scores of essays, carefully written and prepared, were stacked in Dr. Vandevert’s office today. Prizes will be awarded pupils writing the three winning essays.
The contest was sponsored for the purpose of interesting young folk of Bend in the wild life of the mirror pond and in game laws. Nature study instructors of the various schools cooperated and the essays were written in English classes.
McCool, editor of the Oregonian’s “Wild Life Lines,” expressed a great interest in the contest and asked that he be permitted to see the essays. Accordingly, he and Crockatt were placed on the committee of judges.
