The operators of the hydroelectric dam near the Newport Avenue Bridge began drawing down the water level in Mirror Pond on Monday to allow for maintenance work on the dam.
The project should take about two weeks, according to a news release from PacifiCorp, the company that owns and maintains the dam.
The utility said it intends to lower Mirror Pond about 7 feet in order to bring in equipment to install panels along 20 feet of the upstream side of the 250-foot dam. The panels are intended to reduce water leakage through the dam, allowing for more effective regulation of the water level in Mirror Pond.
Built in 1910, the dam was added to the PacifiCorp generation system in 1930. It produces 1 megawatt of electricity, roughly enough to power 450 average homes, according to Tom Gauntt, spokesman for PacifiCorp.
